If you look on my website, www.jimlarkin.com, to my first post back in 2005, I exaggerated a tiny weeny bit
when I wrote about an upcoming “Three Day WORLD TOUR!!”. Really it was only three gigs in a row, in
three different states. I was drunk with excitement, which lead to the aforementioned exaggeration.
Shoot to September 26th, 2009 where I’ll be leaving from Logan airport on my first trip to Europe, on my
first proper tour with Boston Soul Sensation Jesse Dee, hitting Ireland, England, Belgium, France,
Germany and the Netherlands over 13 nonstop days. Thank you Jesse. And to cap it all off, we’ll come home
and have two days to prepare to open for the Rev. Al Green at the House of Blues in Boston. And that’s the truth.

13 Tuesdays and then some (with apologies to Wednesday mornings)
I’ve got 13 Tuesdays that I’ve wanted to tell you about for awhile now. Three monthly residency’s with three of my favorite local artists, at two of my favorite clubs, on two of my favorite instruments, in one of my favorite towns. Plus a couple-three other cherry gigs sprinkled on top.
Every Tuesday in April with Brendan Hogan at Toad in Cambridge, MA (Drums). Brendan is firstly a blues-man, with a big fingerpickingly seasoned sound. His tunes reflect a kind of vibe from an older time and I’m psyched to be a-time-keeping with him in an older time kind of way. Dana Price, Tom Bianchi, and Danielle Miraglia round out the band. Good to be in the swing with those knuckleheads again. I’m sure other sit ins and features will nuzzle in there as well. You can catch Brendan Saturdays, 9pm on WGBH as the host of “Blues on WGBH” – ‘covering the rich legacy and living tradition of the blues’.
Every Tuesday in May with Ryan Fitzsimmons at Toad in Cambridge, MA (Drums). Just last night we sold out the Lizard Lounge and had a great time with our new friends Amity Front, and Girls, Guns & Glory. Twas a good bill, we should do it again. Ryan is taking the band into the studio come in May to just outside of my hometown – Signature Sounds in Putnam CT. We’re gonna have Goody Goodrich producing – if you know his stuff, we’re in good company. These shows will be a hoot - If I’m lucky Jeremy will let me keep my drums in the green room for 8 of those weeks. Come check it out – after party(s) at Ryan’s place!!
Every Tuesday in June with Jesse Dee at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge MA (Bass). This is one I’ve been really looking forward to. Jesse’s got lots of tricks up his sleeves and is booking the night for all shows. He’s introduced me to some of the best music (on disk and in person) in the last few years and I’m sure these shows will be more of the same. The album is just about wrapped up, and we’re looking for a release date of September. The lineup of players on the album is simply redonk. Everyone plays their heart out. I’ll be sporting my new bass for these shows, which will be worth the price of admission alone. Trust me.
The Jim Larkin Situation is now writing jingles for online demos!! Coincidentally – it’s a good time. I’ve have one fun times corporate project I’m working on now and hope to start adding new clients to the roster soon. If you’re looking for any type of musical elements for flash presentations, online demos or for other media listings get in touch at jim@jimlarkin.com.
The gigs above aren’t the only ones. Oh-no no no (shake of the head, wag of the finger). I’ll be playing along with Dana Price this Friday at the Brookline Tai Chi center (Bass & Drums) too. Keep your eyes and your bananas peeled for upcoming gigs at Tommy Doyles, Atwoods, the Edgewater in Salem, Johnny D’s, Tufts University and others. See the full list below. As always keep checking the myspace for the latest. Thanks you guys - I’ll see you at the show.

Its true. As the flyer states - We'll be playin, singin, strummin and groovin every Tuesday ('cept Christmas) in December as the mighty Winter Wonder Band. Its like a flock of songwriters. Good ones. You're gonna like it. Check it out. December is a slow month. You can come in late on Wednesday mornings that month. seriously. there was a thing in the kitchen about it. come in late. its cool. good times.
Tom Bianchi, Ryan Fitzsimmons, Greg Klyma, Jim Larkin, Danielle Miraglia, Dana Price = The Winter Wonder Band.
Tuesdays in December at the Lizard Lounge
1667 Mass Ave
Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138
It seems like just yesterday I sat down to my trusty apple 2e and started typing away at the last JLS newsletter. Thems the days. OK enough with the grabass and lets get down to business.
There is a lot to get through here so I thought I’d make a one brand new word so you could remember it all. Here goes.
newlynnstudiogigsattoadpassimnarrowsparadisegulu-gulujohnnydsjamswithchristianzackgigswithjesseryangregksojoehughsolo.
Now if you can just remember that one new big word, we’ll be looking good. Real good. Sweeter than You-Hoo. If you need more read below:
The biggest dilly is that Northern Living at its Finest Studios has a new home. Located in the historic Boston Machine Lofts of Central Square in Lynn, things have never sounded sweeter. Not unlike the aforementioned Yoo-Hoo. Steps from the beach and all loft, its been a haven for….well me slapping my bass, and running thru KSo charts…... Pickin parties to follow.
Things with Mr. Jesse Dee are tight. Real tight. The new disk has hit 2 inch tape thanks to Jack Younger at Basement 247, who runs a sweet analog studio in the belly of Allston with every piece of vintage gear you could ever want. Long story short I played a Hofner-copy Sekova with 10,000 year old tapewounds on a few tracks. Alls I’m sayin. Can’t wait to hear how things turn out. Target date for the disk to drop? – Fall ’07. We’ve just wrapped up some big gigs at the Iron Horse and the Paradise amongst others featuring sit-ins with Christian McNeil, Miksis and Jesse C to name a few. You know how I love the sit ins. Thems my jams. See below for the scoop on the next few shows.
Ryan Fitzsimmons and the Fitzetts have been gelling better than ever. We’ve got a solid lineup (sort of) and the shows have been killing. Gts. We got some big doolies coming up at the Narrows Center for the Arts down in Fall Rivah, including their annual Arts Festival. Last year I was lucky enough to do the fan-ish, “hey man I love your stuff” thing with Owen from the Wood Brothers. This year I get to play it. Quite a treat to say the least.
Speaking of treats ice cream and faces were melted the other night at Allston’s Herrells with my buddy Zac Galen. An impromptu show was thrown at this the preeminent frosty cream shack in Boston just to hear the man play. A mini Situation broke out early – sadly dedicated to the passing of a local legend Mr. Butch.
Some serious shows coming up with my man Hugh McGowan at Passim, outdoor evening park show with KSO, Joe Rathbone at Johnny D’s (my new favorite green room) and of course the Toad residency with Ryfitz and Greg Klyma, love those long nights drumming.
So come see the new studio, come to the shows, cum on feel the noise. Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Many a project, multitudes of bootys shaking and not a dry eye in the room. Thanks y'all - see you at the show.

P.s. I almost forgot – solo show opening for Jesse Dee guitarist Matt Joy and the Orchestra of this Sat Sept 8th. Unfortch the JLS has been an elusive thing much like the honeybees of late. My man Steve over at the Gulu-Gulu was instrumental in advice about the BML. Great grub and ambiance, the Gulu is the shiz, and nicely located across the street from NL@IF. Check it.

So have you ever had a Nashville songwriter with a harmony-singing drummer in tow come over your house and show you a dozen tunes to be played onstage five hours later? I just had this experience over the weekend and I highly recommend it. The gentleman in question is Joe Rathbone, a friend of many friends and fantastic singer-songwriter who is on a road dog jaunt all over the Eastern seaboard. We just finished up at TOAD last night opening up the night for Jess Tardy and her band featuring my buddy Noam Weinstein. Closing out the night was the Modern Vintage Queen Miss Tess. Serious serious cabaret business. Rathbone left the gig last night (after staying for all the acts mind you) to drive a solid 16hrs to Nashville where he had a gig 24 hours later (tonight)….. Good times, good times.
Next up we've got a double hitter of Worcester/Cambridge shows with Jesse Dee. Soul, emotion, and the man can enjoy a nice glass of Bushmills too. These are very important things in the world of bands/rehearsal. These last few shows have been really feeling good, and the next few ain't looking too shabby neither. We're playing first Feb 15th out at Tammany Hall with our good friends Zac Galen and 2Adam12, hot off of their CD release at the Middle East. Zac recently called from out on tour with Teresa Storch in CA and mentioned some late in the night hijinx may ensue. Sounds like a drum & bass pajama jammy jam. The next night we'll be playing the Lizard Lounge Friday Feb 16th with one of my favorite local bands The Resonance (good guys, good guys), as well as Christian McNeil of Hybrasil fame. We'll be heading into the studio in mid march to lay down Jesse's debut album…..more to follow.
All throughout the month of March I'll be playing drums with members of the Winter Wonder Band most notably Austin, TX's own Greg Klyma. Now this mother grabber may take the title for supreme absolute road dog. Take a gander at his show schedule and you'll see what I mean. We'll be playing the Tuesday residency slot over at TOAD. Rumor has it that Ryan Fitzsimmons will be opening all shows with Danielle Miraglia and Greg co-headling the nights. Rounding out the band is triple-threat Dana Price and bass monster Tom Bianchi. Great bunch o' songwriters - Good times shall abound.
My man from 2Adam12, Mark Parrington gave me a call recently asking if I'd be interesting in playing bass for Kevin So. Kevin's has a number of upcoming Boston shows backing his new album, 'A Brighter Day'. I jumped at the chance. Mark is one of my favorite drummers in Boston right now, very musical and simply killing it. And if you don't know Kevin So – check him out. Heavy hitter is an understatement. Great R&B songs and an old buddy to many of the players in town. A real treat to play with – this guy's got the goods. Between the two of them, this is a gig come true. Club Passim Sunday March 4th – 7:30pm.
Ryan Fitzsimmons is rocking the Burren with the aforementioned Dana Price, Fez Aswat and I wouldn't be surprised if Hugh Mcgowan makes an appearance too. March 28th 9:45pm.
So with all of the above going on, I haven't had a lot of time to work on The Jim Larkin Situation proper. Although the larger TJLS has been getting a workout. Right now we're shooting for a June gig, maybe at the Burren? We'll see. This would make it a yearly event and a tip top night. The recording at Northern Living at its Finest Studios too has been on the back burner...maybe working its way to the side burner not unlike a sneaky chess piece, and eventually to the front burner. Boston Bassist. Again more to follow on that.
Many a project, multitudes of bootys shaking and not a dry eye in the room. Thanks y'all - see you at the show.
Long time since the last update, but this one is cherry. Hmmm where to start (tapping chin). New gigs, bands lost, bands found. Its an update throwdown. Hmmm where to start.
First off, after not much deliberation both Doc B and I have made motions to move on from The Fair Enough. We had a wonderful run. Two and a half years. Just short of 100 shows, six different states, countless bands on and off the road that weve met and raged with. Harpers Ferry, The Middle East, the Paradise main room and Lounge, Lions Den NYC, Century Lounge Providence, Nectars in VT, Dover Brick House in NH and of course the Skybar. So many great great shows and good times. Weve seen a million faces and weve rocked them all. But but but it aint over - Stu and Aaron are going to keep The Fair Enough flame alive with a new rhythm section and Iâ....m sure shit will be ripped up. Ill be there front and center for the first big show. I wish them the best.
Some hot hot shows coming up at my favorite places to play. Im playing bass with non other than Mr. Jesse Dee and drumming alongside Ryan Fitzsimmons. Part of these upcoming shows please check out good friends 2 Adam 12, Jen Kearney and the Lost Onion, Tall Palm, Hugh Mcgowan and Zac Galen as I believe for all these shows its listed on the ticket as being off the hizzey. Im pretty sure it says that.
Youve asked and Im responding. The myspace page has been updated to include some tip top tasty tidbits - namely a few videos from The Fair Enough in the studio and at the Paradise, & The Bill Carleton Band at Tribeca Rock Club NYC & AS220 in Providence, as well as the multitude of shows coming up which leads me to:
Big thanks to all who have made it out to the shows over the summer and into the fall. Some exciting things are afoot. Jesse Dee and company are heading into the studio in the not to distant future working with Boston based label 7 Not Records. The Jim Larkin Situation will rear its ugly head during the winter months with a slew of new material and has also booked some time in Somervilles Northern Living at its Finest Studios for an upcoming project slated for early 07. The waiting list for that guy is ample. Annnnd theres talk of an Always Naysaying v2 around the bend. Many a project, multitudes of bootys shaking and not a dry eye in the room. Thanks yall see you at the show.
So once again we've got some big doings. I have my first
solo show in
a few years, if you count playing in the subways. Some predictable
tunes, some new ones, jams and originals. We'll see. Come on down
to the Somerville's Kirkland
Cafe Thursday June 15th 8pm.
The Nuff has our big summer show headlining Boston's
Paradise
Lounge.
very excited to say we'll be playing with Hartford's Rane.
I did some work
with Alan not too long ago, and after their set at Nectars last fall
we're real
amped to see what they've been up to. Expect a good night.
And I failed to mention it here but the Ryan
Fitzsimmons Band had a
great night a few weeks back at the Burren.
I've been looking to play there
for some time and I have to say it was everything i thought it would
be. Twas a
good gig is all.

So just as I'm talking about life on the road - BOOM
the Nuff gets asked to
play NYC. See - that's how it happens, right when you least expect it.
The
'Nuff will grace the stage at the Lions
Den in the heart of Greenwich Village
Friday July 15th 7:30 PM. This show bookends 'The Fair Enough &
Friends'
show the following night at Somerville's Skybar. Wicked. It might be
a
stretch, but Im gonna go ahead and call this one a world tour as well.
Especially because the bands biggest Freud fan and drummer Doc B will
be
flying to the gig. Flying. To the gig. Jeez I mean we're only playing
for like 45
minutes. 45 hard rockin minutes that is. that's world tour material.
Always NaySaying
has booked some time at Northern Living to flesh out
some of the crude jams listed below. Maybe even with guest appearances?
Check the trusty 'ol myspace.com/alwaysnaysaying
for updates. Word.
And this is it. The fabled & often elusive
'Nuff CD Release Party has found its
home. Bill's Bar
Thursday Sepember 8th on Landsdown st. we gonna RAGE FACE.
We're really really excited bout this one. We started this recording
Jan 31st at Chillhouse. This is big.
In the words of the A-Team's vigilant leader Col. John
'Hannibal' Smith, "I love it when a plan comes together."

New A.N. Recordings, The Fair Enough & Friends - 6.23.05
After being in the live studio audience for Sarah Brindel's
stripped down
solo performance on Brookline Cable TV's Roots
Rock Live featuring
Pat Keating, I've discussed, brainstormed, leveraged options, wept and
subsequently booked Billy
for a Solo style appearance on the show. You can find
him Live on channel 3A
& 23 at 9pm sharp July 25th. I'll be part of the very
live studio audience. ho hum allways a bridesmaid - never a bride.
Speaking of Dragon Lady Music - The Fair Enough would like to announce
the
first "The Fair Enough & Friends"
Night of music & mayhem. We've booked the
night alongside good friends Sarah
Brindel, Emergenza Finalists - Matt
Chase Group,
and Providence's Dagnabbit.
All this music jammed & crammed into Somerville's
Skybar Saturday July 16th.
Check the Linxs
page for the CD baby listing of Coriander .04. Yours truly on
bass and asst. percussion on most of that album. If we all think
happy thoughts - we might just see the release of Coriander .05 in '05.
Always Naysaying is currently recording at Northern
Living. yep.
AND FINALLY: The Fair Enough
makes it out of Boston! The Hub's tried to keep us a secret - but
the biggest little band from Beantown is heading on the road. Officially.
Jables tells me that life on the road is hard, life on the road
is tuff. So we'll be
keeping that in mind as we kiss our respective wives and depart for
the far off
land of Worcester, MA to a place they call the Lucky
Dog. 9pm July 21.
Ta DAaaaaaaaa (jazz hands)

Seemingly not a big deal but i'm very excited to be a
part of the largest independent online retailer of music. thats good
stuff. i've
bought loads of great music there, music you really can’t find
anywhere else.
its just a small thrill to be a part of that jammie.
So after many requests by the public to the good people
at Apple and iTunes in
specific, Bill Carletons debut album, "As Promised" is now
available for download.
Rock that. You'll find yours truly as the rhythm section on bass and
drums for
that album. Just open your iTunes 'store' and search Bill Carleton.

The nuff will be gracing the stage at the old school
rock joint the Abbey

of emergenza at the Paradise last month. so make sure you bring your
socks. Cause
their gonna get rocked off.

Based on the huge success of the 'Billy C & Jimbo's New Bass Duo'
at the Space
last weekend, we are recreating the experience at the famed All Asia
in Cambridge, MA
this Friday May 27th. As well the full Bill Carleton Band will be playing
the
West Side Arts Soap Box Festival in Providence, RI Saturday May 28th.
Rain or shine.
Unless it totally spits thunder and craps lightning. Cause who wants
to play in that?
I just want to thank everyone
for all the support last weekend with both the 'Nuff and BCB
shows. The Paradise rocked! Hard. We hear there are alot of conspiracy
theories going on about
the voting and rules and the hey hey, but we came out with the bronze
for the night (that
means we came in 3rd). It was a great great night and we look forward
to next years
Emergenza. Videos will be posted here soon and on the 'Nuff's site.
J-Bird - good to see you, and
to the guy who cought the T-Shirt, I hope your feeling better soon.
Thanks again - twas a blast.
Some big shows going on this weekend - Boston, New York and Hamden,
CT.
Here's the dilly:
Thanks to you, The Fair Enough advanced to the next round of the Emergenza Music Festival!
We will be playing at the worlds largest
Battle of the Bands this Thursday May 19th 8:30 PM sharp at the Paradise (the Big
Room) in Boston. **Lil Promo for the show - this $12
ticket comes with a complimentary copy of The Fair Enough's debut album
(in stores & online now). And if you did make it to the Middle East,
well, we'll blow out a little something extra for you. Rawk.
Like Round 1, Round 2 winners at the Paradise are determined
by audience
vote, but this time, only one band advances. We'll have a shot at
advancing to the Northeast regional final at Avalon (!) in June, and
then the world final in Germany. So we need you, all you guys to come
on
out and help us rawk. C'mon it's for a good cause! Cause for borderline
nonstop rocking!
Billy and I are going to wrap the three day run as a
guitar & bass duo
with a set at the Space
in Hamden, CT on Sat
May 21st. Whew. (final rocking)
So thanks again for everyone who came out and who already have tickets
for the big gigs!! Very excited bout these shows. Pod casts, T-shirts,
Debut Album available at all shows and online soon. Thanks again &
I'll
see you at the show.
